Purchasing seasonal foods brings many advantages, such as enjoying ingredients at their freshest, saving money, supporting local farmers, and lowering environmental impact. This month the temperature starts to drop, and warm, hearty & cozy dishes begin to emerge! Check out a few of these superfoods that are seasonal in September!
APPLES:
Apples are a quintessential fall fruit, typically in season from late August through November. Many apple varieties are available in the fall, such as Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, and Granny Smith, each with its unique taste and use.
PEAR:
Many pear varieties are available in the fall, such as Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou, and Comice. You’ll find most of these crisp, fall fruits at their peak in September through December.
LEEK:
Leeks are low in calories and rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate, iron, and manganese. They also contain antioxidants and fibre. Use leeks raw in salads, in soups or bread, baked into quiches or tarts or sautéd as a side or into your favourite casserole!
FIG:
Figs are a delicious fruit that reaches peak season in the fall, typically from late summer through early autumn. They are nutrient rich and contain antioxidants that can help protect cells and reduce inflammation. Pair them with your favourite cheese, eat them as a snack, stuff them with nuts or make them into a jam! They not only taste great but they’re versatile too.
TUNA:
The season for tuna can vary depending on the species and location.
Bluefin Tuna such as Atlantic Bluefin and Pacific Bluefin is typically in season from June to October and May to September.
Yellowfin Tuna: Is available year-round in tropical and subtropical waters, with peak seasons from late summer to early fall. Lastly, Albacore Tuna is usually in season from late summer to early fall (July to October).
ACORN SQUASH:
Acorn squash is a type of winter squash known for its distinctive ribbed skin and acorn-like shape. It is a good source of vitamins A and C, potassium, and dietary fibre. It’s available starting in fall and early winter. Acorn squash can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 months.
